How to be a “Girlboss”

One of the best quotes of all time is, “your vibe attracts your tribe.” This could not be more true, and it proves itself to be an important, self-reflective question to ask ourselves, “What vibe do I give off and what kind of tribe do I choose to surround myself with?” If you consider yourself to be a driven, goal-oriented, and motivated woman then you may consider yourself to be part of the Girlboss Tribe. Being a Girlboss means that you set the bar higher and higher for yourself, and never settle in any aspect of your life. Going to an all women’s college, I am constantly interacting with smart, ambitious, creative and uplifting women on a day-to-day basis and it is quite an unique experience compared to the traditional co-ed college experience.

Attending Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana has provided me with some incredible opportunities, one of which happened recently. I was asked to be a student ambassador at the college’s presidential event for alumnae and donors in Chicago. This, of course, was a fantastic networking opportunity for me, and one that I was lucky and honored to have. There were many Girlboss, slaying vibes being exchanged that evening between the alumnae and the students attending. Moreover, from this event I gained a few Girlboss nuggets of wisdoms that I thought I would share with you! *insert side smile emoji here*

Girlboss Tip #1

Strut your stuff. Carry yourself with a certain confidence and know what you can bring to the table. If you need help with this – and many of us do, then work with a coach or mentor to build confidence. Seek out those in your life who can be your cheerleader and who can honestly assess your strengths and weaknesses in a supportive and uplifting way.

Girlboss Tip #2

Get outside your comfort zone!! If you’re a college student GO TO AS MANY NETWORKING EVENTS AS POSSIBLE. Be committed and invested in yourself and your future. Job shadow and connect with alums from your school! I’ve learned if you do your part, they will do anything to help you. I’ve also learned you have nothing to lose and everything to gain when you network. If anything, you gain more awareness as to who you are destined to be, or you go through the procession of elimination of what you don’t want to be. There’s no right or wrong way to figuring out what you want to do for the rest of your life. Bottom line, put yourself out there even if it takes some nudging to get yourself going! The first few steps can be the hardest, but once you’re going – your gone!

Girlboss Tip #3

Build other people up. Not only will this empower others, but it will humble you and empower you to be a better person and friend as well. Words of affirmation are my love language (giving and receiving), so I have found it easier to attract my tribe through genuinely and authentically affirming others. The world needs more people who do this. Think about if people started to point out all of things that make you strong, beautiful, and fearless. (It’d be amazing. Life would be made.) So let’s build each other up now, shall we?! The Girlboss mindset is infectious and it rubs off on people who are hungry to slay more than what they currently are.

Girlboss Tip #4

Put yourself together. Beyoncé could not have said it any better and it’s personally a motto I live by, “when you look better, you feel better”. Whatever makes you feel like a queen. Do it. Grab your favorite red lipstick, put on that all black outfit, and some pointed toe black heals, and you will be well on your way to conquering the day ahead of you! You will be better off for it… plus being the force behind other people turning their heads is an automatic confidence booster!

Girlboss Tip #5

You know that you are going to be successful. There is nothing more powerful than a person who can walk into a room and have nothing to prove to anyone except themselves. Know your purpose, stay mindful of what drives you, and keep yourself inspired every day.

Girlboss Tip #6

You allow rejection to be redirection. You do not allow rejection to hinder your path to success, and instead you let it drive you towards what is truly destined for you.

Girlboss Tip #7

You have a daily to-do list, journal about your goals and dreams, and a vision board. These Girlboss tools are key to keeping you inspired and remind you to dream BIG.

Girlboss Tip #8

You are passionate. You genuinely love what you do, and it gives you the motivation to get up in the morning and to do it all over again day after day.

Girlboss Tip #9

You know how to put yourself first. We will have a tough time loving others unless we love ourselves first.

Girlboss Tip #10

You are focused and self-driven. You have your eyes on the prize, and you know what it takes to get there. People may refer to you as an overachiever.

When it comes to channeling your inner Girlboss, it’s a mindset day in and day out. That’s how you achieve the “Girlboss” status. It’s an aura about you that you either have or you don’t. If you don’t, you work at it, and surround yourself with people who are committed to excellence within themselves. If you already have it, then keep surrounding yourself with like-minded Girlbosses, stay focused, and open to new opportunities to grow.
